ROAD CYCLE CONTEST
MCVILLY CHALLENGE SHIELD
The Port Nicholson A team, comprising P. N. Robinson, E. E. Poulton, 0. Disley, L. Sowerby, and A. Sowerby, won the first of a series of three road cycle races for the R. W. McVilly Challenge Shield on Saturday afternoon. The Poneke A team, captained by C. Ericsson, was second. Seven teams, with five riders in each, competed. They were dispatched at five-minute intervals in the order drawn by the team captains. The first team to leave the mark was the Hint Valley B team. Then followed, in order, the Poneke C team, Port Nich-1 olson A team, Poneke B team, Poucke j A team, Hutt Valley A team, and the Port Nicholson B team. The course was from the Petone rowing sheds to Quinn's Post and back, the distance being 25 miles. The times recorded were very creditable. At the turning point the Port Nicholson A team was leading the Hutt Valley A team by 37 seconds. -The Poneke A team had taken one second slower. On the home journey, ■whatever chances the Poneke A team had were spoilt by R. Ulmer and T. Udall being brought down by a car, necessitating Udall being sent to hospital for medical attention. Behrent, B. Taylor), 71min 30 1-osec, 7. ' Prior to the start of the race, Mr. J. Stalker, chairman of the Wellington Cycling Centre, outlined the conditions of the competition for the shield, and apologised for the absence of the donor, Mr. McVilly. Mr. H. I. Austad, of the New Zealand Cycling Council, also spoke. He avid he hoped the teams' racing would create a friendly, keen rivalry between the riders. Great keenness was shown by officials and competitors, and with the riders of each team riding in their respective club colours, the display was most impressive.
The nest race of the series is to be held at Petone on July 29, over the same course. FIXTURES. The Hutt Valley and Port Nicholson Clubs will be holding a combined race at Petone on Saturday next. At Kilbirnie. the Poneke Club will hold a 42 miles event for the senior riders. The juniors will contest a 10 miles event.
