SENATOR MASSY GREENE

NEW ZEALAND NEGOTIATIONS

TRADE ACROSS TASMAN

(Received March 30, 10 a.m.)

CANBBBKA, This Day. All available Ministers in Canberra were summoned to the -'Acting-Prime Minister's office to hear Senator Massy Greene's radiotelephone report of the negotiations with the New Zealand Government. Secrecy was observed by tho Ministers, but it was indicated that there was a reasonable ■ prospect of most.of the points of difference being reconciled. On the important question of the fruit embargo, however, much ground is yet to be covered. It is understood that tho New Zealand Government insists that Australia should reciprocate by the complete removal of the potato embargo. Ministers declined to give even a hint of the Government's view on the potato embargo. The Acting-Prime Minister (Mr. J. G. Latham) states that the Government is in daily communication with Mr. Massy Greene, and from the nature of his reports it is considered that the way is being paved for a trade agreement satisfactory to the Australian and New Zealand Governments.

Mr. Greene leaves New Zealand on April C.
