WHEAT RESEARCH.

INSTITUTE APPRECIAT£O \

The Wheat Research Institute, rui< under the auspices o£ the Department oj Scientific and Industrial Research, recento Iy circularised various associations as t«J their views on the continuance of thjj institute. Farmers' Unions have replied unanimously in favour of a continuance of the work of the institute. Millers have also given the institute almost unanimous support, and so have bakers. One objecting association, when an offer was mada to address it on the subject, spontaneously rescinded its previous resolution anif changed opposition into support. "The reasons of the opponents of th« institute are instructive," remarks a Departmental memorandum. "They are generally opposed neither to its constitution nor to its work, but say that it ia the duty of the miller to produce good flour without the help of the baker. The answer given has been that if this is so then the institute is helping the miller to' fulh'l that duty both by its plant breeding and by its wheat testing: that this is liie only workable organisation so far evolved for that purpose, and that it 3 future existence would be jeopardised by the bakers' defection. The commonest troubles of the baker are commercial ones outside the scope of otir work. Since it; then appears that the bakers are to stay in the institute, the mode,of collection o£ their levies must again be considered, and the presentation of the case to Cabinet must now also be undertaken."
