MR. L. C. H. PALAIRET

• FAMOUS CRICKETER

Mr. Lionel C.H. Palairet, the famous cricketer, died suddenly at his home at Exmouth, at the age of 63. He was a brother of the co-manager of the English cricket teauv now in J\ ew Zealand (Mr. K. C. N. Palairet).

Though his name will always be associated with Somerset, Lionel Charles Hamilton Palairet was born in Lancashire on May 27, 1870, and was a year older than his brother now in New Zealand. Both brothers played for Kepton School, Oxford University, and Somerset County. "Old Trafford may well mourn a . lost possibility," wrote an admirer of Mr. Palairet in the '90's when he was at the height of his form. "Mr. Palairet is the most beautiful batsman of the day . . . his stylo combines pure grace | and elegance with full effectiveness and power." He was'an exponent of the finest type of forward play. Tall, slender, lithe, and long-limbed, his physique was perfectly adapted for this style, and he had every quality desirabje in iC batsmah. He was also a useful change bowler, right-hand' medium, with a graceful action, and an exceptionally fine field in the country. He played for Shrewsbury's England XI v. Australia at Nottingham in 1893; for IC. L. Thornton's England 51 v. Australia at Scarborough, 1896, • and England v. Australia at Manchester and the Oval in 1902. With H. T. Hewett, he made what was then a. record score (346) for the first wicket against Yorkshire at Taunton'in 1592. He led the Oxford XI in 1592 and 1593. An a?l-round athlete, he ran for Oxford against Cambridge in the threemile race in 1592 and was a member of the Corinthian Football Club' in the same year.
