NEW YORK, March 27. Despite an announcement by the State Department based on reports from the Embassy at Berlin, stating in part, "where there was for a short timo considerable, physical mistreatment of Jews, this phase may b 0 considered virtually terminated/ American Jewry devoted today to prayers and fasting. Tonight, it is estimated, a million- Jews gathered throughout the nation militautly to protest against Hcrr Hitler's treatment of their coreligionists, and in most cases representatives of the /Christian churches participated. ''
In New York 20,000 Jews crowded Madison Square Garden. Other thousands met out of doors, and heard a series of addresses which were broadcast throughout' the nation, internationally.
The speakers, in addition to Jewish leaders, included Mr. Alfred Smhh. and the Mayor, Mr. O'Brien. * Messages of approval were read from practically every State Governor.
The tenor of. the speeches disclaimed hostility to Germany, but declared that outrages against Jews must cease, 'and the meeting drafted a demand to that effect for presentation to the German Government through the " Ambassador here.
