A TEMPORARY JUDGE?

MORTGAGE RELIEF ACT

REQUEST TO GOVERNMENT

It is understood that considerable difficulty is being experienced in interpreting the various Acts of Parliament dealing with the question of relief for. mortgagors, and the feeling is growing in some quarters that some action /hould be taken by the Government' to overcome the difficulty. A "Post" reporter was authoritatively informed today that a request has been made to the Government by interested parties that a temporary Judge Bhould be appointed to deal with the position.

Questioned on this point, the Minis-t*-#f Justice (the Hon. J. G. Cobbe) said~4hat there was nothing that he could say for publication at the moment. The Government had' not yet reached any decision as to the appointment of a temporary Judge. In the event of the Government deciding to appoint a temporary Judge, it would be for the Prime Minister (the Et. Hon. G. W. Forbes), in his capacity as Attorney-General, to make the appointment.

The last temporary Judge appointed in New Zealand was Mr. Charles Edward Button, who occupied a seat on the Supreme Court Bench for a limited time in 1907.
