WAIHI .HOSPITAL INQUIRY
In reply to an inquiry made by the chairman of the Waihi Hospital Board, Colonel Jowsey, 'as to whether the forthcoming departmental inojiiry by Dr. Shore ' into the recent hospital trouble, which resulted in the dismissal of the matron, Miss'-M. K. Stevenson, would be open to the Press, Dr. M. H. Watt, Director-General; of : health, stated that it was not iris intention that counsel or representatives of the Press should be prospnt (rep6rts tho! Dr. Shore -would, as director of the division of hospitals, interview members of the staff, including the matron and secretary, and would take statements in writing. .He would also be prepared to receive any information which the .chairman might care to place before him. bearing on tho dismissal of Miss Stevenson and the management of the institution.
The board would in due course be advised of the Department's conclusions and recommendations, if any, and it was,.suggested that it could then be seen' whether further publicity in defence of the board's actions was called for. ■ ..■',.
The inquiry was to open today. The chairman, when communicating with the Director-General, informed him 'that the board favoured a public inquiry. ■ . ■
