17TH BATTERY CAMP
The annual camp of the 17th 'Battery, N.Z.A.. was held last week at Waipukurau. The weather was fine, and a veryenjoyable and instructive week was spent. The camp staff, under Major G. B. Parkinson (camp commandant), Lieut. Joyce (adjutant), and Captain E. S. Park (chief instructor) supervised the instruction. Shooting was carried out on Thursday and Friday, and several excellent* series showed that good team work produces good results. On Sunday afternoon visitors were entertained to afternoon tea. The sports programme resulted aa follows:— Obstacle race, L.-Bdr. Ransom, Gnrs. Kaye, Bartley, Symonds; musical chairs (on horseback), Gnr. Bartley, Lieut. Joyce; relay race, Sergt. HcMurray, Gnrs. HayMackenzie, Kaye,:and Wellington. A team of cricketers from the camp tried conclusions with a local eleven, but ended 20 runs short on the first innings. Gnr. Wilde (38) and Gnr. Wright (five wickets for 40) performed best for the camp. During the week a very enjoyable concert was staged at the camp by a party from the Waipukurau Operatic Society. The battery was commanded by Major G. B. Cowie, who had with him Lleuts. A. Ainslie, E. Lambourne, J. Tait,.. and H. Babjngton.
