DISPLAY OF FLYING

NORTH ISLAND PAGEANT

A very; high standard

AUCKLAND, March 26.

The official North Island pageant and flying display was held at the Mangere aerodrome on Saturday in perfect weather, before a crowd of 3500. Machines from all parts of New Zealand attended, arid the events were carried through without mishap. The Southern Cross, piloted by Sir Charles Kingsford Smith en route for Ninety Mile Beach and AustraUa, passed over the aerodrome. Eesults of the competitions are as follows:—

Wigram Cup (club scoring highest aggregate marks in the competition);— Auckland Aero Club.

, Landing Competition, "A" pilots.—F. Finlayson (Southland), 1; R. G. Tappenden (Auckland), 2. There were good displays by the winner and the runner-up, both showing competent handling.

Bombing, "A" licence pilots.—C. Lewis (Auckland), 1; K. G. Smith (Wellington), 2. Three bombs had to be dropped as near to a stationary car as possible from, a height of not less than 200 feet. Lewis was an easy, winner, his nearest shot being five yards' away. Entrants from Southland, Canterbury, Wellington, New. Plymouth, Hawera, Wanganui, and Auckland took part.

"New Zealand Herald" Interclub Trophy Reliability Race.—Sl. K. Archibald (Wellington), 1; Pilot-Officer.Owen (Auckland), 2. The race was over a four-sided course, with sealed instructions opened ten minutes before the take-off. An observer was carried in order to judge.

i Acrobatic Contest, "A" licence clubtrained pilots.—E. B. Firth (Auckland), 1; M. K. Archibald (Wellington), 2. Firth was an easy winner, giving an outstanding display. His three minutes' voluntary stunting showed perfect control, and included upside-down flying, half-roll off loop, slow roll, upward roll, and'flick loop.

Landing Competition, "B" licence pilots.—Flight-Lieutenant D. M. Allan (Auckland), 1; Flying-Officer J. Smith (Southland), 2. Other entrants were Captain C. Mercer (Canterbury) and Flying-Officer I. Keith (New Plymouth).

An exceptionally high standard was displayed, Allan and Smith dead-heat-ing for first place. In the "fly-off" Alian won by a close margin.
