Phillips Tnrritesfrom Kaitoke stating that opossums have increased because of the close season last year; that opossums reduce the native birds by eating bird-food (especially winter berries) and by scaring the birds off their nests in summer, as the opossums' nocturnal rambles cause the birds to leave the nests long enough for young or eggs to be destroyed by cold; and that the toll on plants and birds, imposed' by the opossum, hinders regeneration of the forest. Mr. Phillips emphasises the birdlessness of the Tauherenikau forest as compared with years ago, and calls for steps to protect bush and birds, from the opossum,
