ANOTHEE DEPRESSION

FINE IN MEANTIME

A. deep- depression over tho southeastern part of Australia and tho western portion of tho Tasman Sea is vr ■ . likely to affect, adversely New Zealand's weather shortly, but when it will do this depends on the ability of the fairly intense now enveloping the Dominion to hold back tho advancing harbinger of unsettled weather. In tho meantime, according to tho forecast issued, at noon today, moderate southerly winds will prevail at first north of Now -Plymouth and Napier. Over tho remainder of tho Dominion freshening north-westerly winds may be expected, and these will rise to gale force in places in and south of Cook Strait. The weather will be becoming unsettled with rain in tho western and far' southern districts of the South Island, some of tho falls being heavy on the West Coast. Elsewhere for- the 'time being tho weather should be fine, and temperatures will become warm again.

The anticyclone was responsible for fine and cool weather yesterday "in most parts of the Dominion, although some slight . low pressure waves passing southwards caused some scattered rain in West Coast and far southern districts of the South- Island. These falls were mostly light, but Okuru, in Westland, had as much as 210 points of rain. , Moderate winds from between the south-west and north-west have predominated, but a fresh southerly has blown at times in far northcm . districts. ' .At 9 a.m. today a moderate north-westerly gale was blowing at Puysegur Point.

All the main centres enjoyed fine and pleasant weather yesterday, "Wellington having over ten hours of uninterrupted bright sunshine.
