DEBRIS ON WANGANUI RIVER
During Tuesday night's downpour at Wangauui as much as au inch of ia,iu ivas recorded in an hour, and the channels in the city streets were inadequate to cope with the water, the roads and footpaths " being flooded in places (states the "Herald"). People on their way to theatres had an unpleasant 'experience, and in parts of Victoria Avenue the water invaded shops.
At the Public Library, a blockage in the roof caused an inflow of water between tho, roof and the coiling,'and when this had banked up considerably it was driven, through to the room beneath which was; flooded to a depth of several inches. Members of the staff, assisted by subscribers and readers who were in the building at the time, hurriedly removed tho books from the affected area.
Another terrific downpour occurred about midnight, find continued for nearly half an hour. ••
At noonl yesterday the Postmaster at Pipiriki advised that the ; Wanganui River was running at about 30f; above normal, and was still rising. Thousands of tons of timber were being swept down the river, enough to supply the whole of Wanganui for the winter.
