USEFUL WORK

(To the.Editor.) ■ Sir,—The Wellington district noxious weed area offers useful work for the unemployed. One hears daily about there being no useful jobs available for unemployed labour, whilst the truth is that there is any amount of urgent useful work crying out to be done round Wellington and suburbs. ■-■■'■■--■ .'■■..;-' ,-.,_•-. ;.—;-.-,■ ; . , The noxious weed menace is increasing by leaps arid; bounds." At every :road access north of Wellington one sees, at the sides of the roads and creeping up the hill faces, and encroaching further and further on the railway line, huge crops of fennel in full, flower or carrying, heavy seed heads. These are now spreading on to the rich flats in the.Hutt Valley and other districts, along with ;blaekberry and other noxious weeds, establishing themselves and becoming increasingly difficult to eradicate.- There has been much talk, in and out ,of Parliament about the restoration of. deteriorated lands (much of which is past redemption) and -in the meantime some of the best' land in the province is allowed to deteriorate. Surely prevention is better than cure, and it is high time that urgent drastic action be taken t6 .check this fearful menace. I coniinend it to the powers that be.—l am, __ jl - ■ DO IT NOW.
