(By Telegraph.) (Special to "The Evening Post.") . ... MASTERTON, This Day. The Masterton Chamber of Commerce yesterday discussed the economic situation, with some reference to the high exchange and- sales tax policy and to State interference and unfair competition with private business. Protesting against the .action of the Government, Mr. E: M. Hodder moved: "While appreciating the many difficulties confronting the Government today, it is the opinion of this chamber that the rigid application of the economies recommended by the National Expenditure Commission would do more to meet the country's diminished- income and balance the Budget than the.recent legislation ixing an artificially high rate of exchange and the imposing of the sales tax: Wo protest against the action of the Government in. promoting additional legislation '.which will still further menace the freedom, of our people by multiplicity of regulations, compliance with which will greatly increase the cost of government and of business at a time when it must be reduced." Mr. W..A. Michael suggested that the resolutions in their-wide scope raised questions which wore unsettled and open to difference of opinion. He urged that the. chamber should confine itself to resolutions of a specific character, dealing with matters on which its members had formed definite opinions. Eventually tho draft resolutions were withdrawn and the following, moved by Mr. D. M. Graham, was carried unanimously:—"That this chamber appreciates the efforts of the Associated Chambers in their efforts to safeguard the business community's interests against the interference and opposition of, the Government.''.. . .;-.._ :- . 7
