KILLING THE GOOSE

(To the Editor.)

Sir,—What a benevolent Government we have! I suppose most smokers realise at times that they are smoking too much' of the fragrant weed, and are not enjoying to the full what they, do smoke. They resolve to cut the supply down a bit, but resolutions are weak, and nothing is done. Then along comes the benevolent Government and says, "You rriust pay me in tax a little more on all the tobacco you buy." "Eight," says the consumer, "I was thinking of cutting down my supply, thanks very much for giving added strength to my resolution." Result: Formerly consumed 4oz per week, 3s, duty Is 6d; now consumes 2oz per week, Is Bd, duty lOd. Loss of revenue 8d per week, and everybody happy.. This is the exact"statement of my position, and I suppose there are thousands more who have been helped towards the same good resolution. —I am, etc., A DEVOTEE BUT NOT A SLAVE OF THE WEED.
