Sir John Arthur Thomson, H.A., 'and LL.D. of Edinburgh, McGill, California, and Aberdeen Universities, was lately Kegius Professor of Natural History at the University of Aberdeen. He was born in East Lothian in 1861, and was educated at the centres of learning in Edinburgh, Jena, and Berlin. 'He became Lecturer on Biology and Zoology at the School of Medicine, Edinburgh, and in 1899 went to Aberdeen, where he remained for 31 years. He ]jas published many works on his science, and was also well known as a popular' writer on modern knowledge in various fields. A number .of his works ("Evolution," which came out in 1911, "Sex," which was published in 1914, "Biology," issued in 1924, and a two-volume "Outline of General Biology," which cam© from the press two years ago) were the fruit of collaborations with Professor Patrick Geddes. He was kniglited in 1930.
