OIL FROM COAL

USE IN BRITISH NAVY

OUTLINE OF PROCESS

(British' Official Wireless.)

EUGBY, February 10,

The oil from coal, a year's contract for the supply of which to the British Navy has been ' placed by the Admiralty, is secured by low temperature carbonisation. Small coal is baked in retorts, producing oil, smokeless fuel, and various by-products. The present order, has been placed with Low Temperature Carbonisation, Limited, and follows two years' research on land and sea with a view to standardising a fuel which would* fulfil the exacting requirements, of modern naval vessels.

Low temperature carbonisation process produces from every ton of coal about three-quarters of a ton of semicoke, about 5000 cubic'feet of"gas, and 18 gallons of a tar which is converted into oil. The cheapest kind of coal is used in the process, and there is a big demand for its by-products.
