A little girl, Dawn Betty Mitchell, aged three^ met her death under tragic circumstances at Newtdwn last ■ evening, and as a result her mother,. Ruby May Mitchell, aged 33,. now stands charged with murder. , -

She had re 7 cently been an inmate of the Porirua Mental Hospital, but had been released on-licence about a week ago. She took her small daughter for a walk last evening, and, it is alleged, smothered her in a vacant section in Daniell street. Later in the night she returned home with the body of the child. SubInspector Ward and Detective Smith went to the house and the woman was taken into custody.

_, When Mrs. Mitchell's name was called in the Magistrate's Court today SubInspector Ward said she would not appear, and he asked for a remand, on a charge of murder until February 22. The prisoner, he'said, was a mental defective on licence from the Mental Hospital and it was possible that the hospital authorities would during the period of the remand take her back, if the Magistrate approved. Mrl J. Gr. L. Hewitt, S.M., granted the remand. -.■>-. ... "
