ST. JAMES THEATRE.
Described as the "English Marie Dressier," Alison Skipworth;, heads the cast' \in "The Sporting Widow," the''feature"-picture "at the St. James Theatre this' week; and she acts very much along the same lines as the famous Hollywood star. Her characterisation of 'the Countess" is excellent. and, Indeed, her acting^ hi. no small measure contributes to the success of this amusing picture. With Miss Skipworth are Richard Bennett, Evelyn Knapp, and George Raft, and these noted players ably assist the star. The opening scenes feature tho departure of "the Countess" on a health tour of tho world after being & compulsory guest for five years of a warden. Her exploits 'during the courso of this tour form the main part of the picture, and her scrapes and escapades. are delightfully amusing. Miss Skipworth raises. many laughs as she puts over the bluff 'necessary for. a "sporting widow,", and as a trusting husbnnd Richard Bennett excels himself. ■ He gives. a very polished performance. The spporting programme is most entertaining.'. "It .includes a Mickey Mouse comedy, a ; screen sons, "You Try .Somebody Else," r two newsreels .ofv. particular' ..interest,'. and a pictorial gazette. ; ,.,.
