VETERAN STEEPLECHASER

The veteran steeplechaser, Kawini, now in his fourteenth year, has resumed work at Takanini, and on Tuesday, ridden by his trainer, P. Hall, he gave a safe display over four hurdles. Hall 'stated that he had not been schooled more than two years, but Tuesday's display proved that, although he may have lost some, of his dash, he is still a clever fencer.

Kawini, a gelding by Formative, will be remembered as an unlucky 'chaser, being good enough for places in the biggest events, but many times just failing to grasp the large end of the wad. One season he was third in both Northerns. His most important successes have been in the Waikato Hunt Cup, A.R.C. Winter Steeples, and W.R.C. July Steeples. His last public appearance was in the Clarkin Steeplechase at the 1930 Waikato Spring Meeting, but, according to his trainer, he has been back in work for several months.
