JOTTINGS IN GENERAL
The committee of the Avondale Jockey Club decided at its meeting this week to adopt the win-and-place system of betting at the club's Autumn Meeting, It is reported from Invercargill that the Southland Racing Club has appointed a committee to go into the question. o£ altering the totalisator house ■with a view to the probable adoption of the win-and-placa machine.
Originally the dates for the Avondale Autumn Meeting -were 22nd and 24th April, but an alteration has .now been made and the fixture will be held on Saturday and Monday, Ist and 3rd April. The Avoudale Jockey Club has decided to eliminate the All-aged Stakes from this year's autumn programme, and to replace it with the Whau Handicap, a seven-fur-long event for three and four year olds only, and carrying a stake of 150 soys. The stake for the Railway Handicap, six furlongs, has been increased to 200 soys.
The Matamata Racing Club's Committee was disappointed with the fractions total at last week's meeting. These were less than the previous year, whereas with four dividends being paid in each race it was thought there would be an increase. Gate receipts were down £7 compared with the previous year.
Racing next week will be held by' the Tologa Bay (Thursday). Wangauui (Thursday and Saturday), Clifden (Saturday), and Canterbury (Saturday) Clubs. The Rotorua Meeting will be concluded on Monday. There will be trotting at Auckland on Saturday and the following Wednesday.
A yearling filly by Tea Tray from Dancing Doll and a filly by Weathervane from team at Wingatui, states a southern report. The Dancing Doll filly is a sister to La Poupee and looks a likely sort.
It is stated by an Australian paper that Phai1 Lap's yearling brother had a reserve of 3000gns on him when lie went into the ring at the recent Trentham sales. Mr. W. T. Hazlett made an opening bid of 200gns, but Mr. K. Austin declined to accept a start of less than 500gns.
The latest addition to J. 51. Buchanan's team at Ellerslie is a yearling colt by Gay Shield out of a mare by Lackham from Lady Marie, the dam of Gay Sheila. The newcomer, who was recently purchased by a patron ■■ of Buchanan's stable, is thus closely related to Gay Sheila. He has been broken in and is now quite tractable when being ridden about.
After having spent two months in a nursing home with a broken leg, Harry Wragg, the prominent English jockey, was able to return to his home for Christmas. It was expected that it -would be some time before lie was able to walk without tliß aid of crutches, but he hoped to be able to resume riding at the beginning of the flat racing season nest month.
