EXCHANGE BILL

DIVISION IN COUNCIL

• Ten members of the Legislative Council out of twenty-one (excluding Mr. Speaker) took part in the debate on the Banks Indemnity (Exchange) Bill, and three of the speakers were opposed to the Government's action in raising the exchange. It was thought that a greater number of members would have taken part in such an important debate. '

Eighteen votes were recorded when the Council divided on the second reading, and one member who had spoken in favour of the measure, the Hon. W. Sondgrass, was shut out. Two members, the Hon. Sir Edwin Mitchelson and the Hon. Sir William Hall-Jones, were absent on sick leave.
