MISLEADING POSTER
LONDON NEWSPAPER
OFFICIAL DISAPPROVAL 1
(Beceived 9th February, 1 p.m:)
LONDON, Bth-^bruary. Londoners were startled at lunch-time to read a poster declaring "Australia won't -withdraw." Sir Stanley Jackson, of the M.C.C. committee, said that he considered this an unfair interpretation of the Board's cablegram, which' gracefully ended the unfortunate controversy. _ If tho Press misunderstanding of'the cable continues it'might be necessary for the M.C.C. to hold a ape-* cial meeting and draft a reply to the Board dissociating themselves from the newspaper interpretations. Government * circles and particularly Mr. J. _IL Thomas, who lad followed the cricket controversy more closely than is generally imagined, consider that the Board's reply adequately meets t_\M.C.C.-last cablegram. _ The evening newspape_: give prominence to England's intentions in regard to retaining tho "leg theory.'' "You may take it as definite that the Test will be played," said D. _ Jardine, captain of tho _.C.C. team, in replying to a "Daily Mail" inquiry by telephone. " .*■•'.
_ In it's original cablegram to .the M.C.C. the Australian ■ Board of Control expressed the opinion thai bodyline bowling had assumed snch proportions as to menace the best interests of the game* and it-was regarded as "unsportsmanlike." _The M.C.C. cablegram, to which the Board has now replied, was as follows :—" We note with.pleasure that yon do not consider it necessary to cancel the remainder of the programme and that you are postponing the whole issue until tho tour is completed. May we accept this as a clear indication that the good sportsmanship of our team is not in question? We are sure you will appreciate bow impossible it will be bo play any Test in_the spirit we all desire, nnless both ' sides _are satisfied that there is no reflection on their sportsmanship. When your recommendation reaches us, it shall receive our most careful consideration and be submitted to the. Imperial Cricket Conference."
