VICE-REGAL VISIT
One of the largest galleries ever seen at Miramar assembled yesterday to witness the tennis matches played between the visiting American and the New Zealand teams. Long before 1 o'clock, when the matches started, streams of cars were to be seen driving out Irom town and: from the surrounding districts. There were visitors from all parts of the North Island, as well as many from Christehurch^'some of whom had come to Wellington only for the one day.' But it was an exceptionally good day, the weather being beautiful after threats of rain in; the morning, and the standard of tennis being of an excellence very seldom seen, in New Zealand. Their Excellencies the Governor-Gen-eral and Lady Bledisloe attended, and were accompanied by Sir Cecil Dsty, Captain J. W. Tweedie, Lieutenant B. Thomson, 8.N., and Miss Diana Harris. They were met by Mr. G. Gore (president of the N.Z.L.T.A.) and Mr. and Mrs. J. 0. Peacock. Other guests of the club were Mrs. J.; G. Coates and Miss Coates, the Mayor (Mr. T. C. A. Hislopi) and Mrs. Hislop, and Mr. Calvin _. Hitch '(American.Consul-General) Her Excellency wore a coat of soft sage : green cloth, with large collar and gauntlet cuffs of ermine. Her wide green hat was trimmed with flat flowers. Mrs. Coates wore an ensemble and hat*of cactus green. Mrs. Peacock was in a tailored costume and small hat of dov-o-grey tweed. _,Miss Diana Harris woro:a black frock and hat and* a smart beige coat of summer tweed. Mrs. Hislop wore a nigger brown coat, a beigefelt hat, and red and white spotted scarf.' The wives of the American players were also present. Mrs. Ellsworth Vines wore a navy frieze coat with handsome collar and elbow cuffs of black fox fur, and a small navy hat wit_ an upstanding feather.- Mrs. Wilmer Allison wore a beige fur-trimmed coat and a beige felt hat, and Mrs. J. Van Byn was in a mayoon frock and "skull" hat, and a Lido blue coat with collar of grey summer fur. Among the large crowd were Mr. and Mrs. B. Gotlieb, Mr. and Mrs.'. J. B. Foster/Mr. and Mrs. J. N.
