KURTZ-KALILI TOUR
TEAM FOR NAPIER
At a meeting of the Wellington Centre of the :N.Z.A.S.A. held this week, further details relating to the projected.Visit of the American swimmers, Kalili and Kurtz, were spoken of after the reading of a letter from the secretary of the-as-sociation (Mr. B. O'Neill) setting forth as the dates of the tour suggested* by the Australian Union 14th- March to • 4th April. The letter stated that the terms for.the swimmers would be £25.f0r each appearance, and it was decided that the Wellington Centre should choose either 18th or 25th March as the date for their appearande here. As several other athletic fixtures were-taking place about this period, and as it is probable that the swimmers, arriving, on the ■ Uth, would find it'inconvenient to remain until the 18th, it was decided to recommend the 25th as the preferable date for a Wellington carnival...•■.... .: _ . Two points concerning this carnival were raised by the discussion'of letters from the Hutt Club and the Wellington Ladies* A.S.C. It was decided that on the score of convenience.it would be better if the women's 100> yards championship should be added to the programme for tne carnival. In the event of the non-arrival of the Americans, the race could be transferred to the programme for 4th March, the date .of the-Wellington Centre carnival. An application by the Hutt Club to hold the junior and intermediate championships at its carnival on 23rd February was granted. INVITATION TO JAPANESE. It was urged that the centre suggest to the council that an invitation be sent to Japanese swimming centres with a viewto arranging -the tour of a team of Japanese swimmers in the 1933-34 Season. These newcomers in the Western aquatic world should dp much to popularise and improve swimming in New Zealand. Wellington's representatives at the New Zealand championships at Napier .were put forward as ii. Spry, J.'C* Blakeley, and Miss P. Price. The polo team suggested consisted of J. Logic, G. Balfour, B. Mclyer (manager), J. .C. Blakeley, F. Clark,. F. Ryan, and 'K. Spry,, with Milne as emergency. It is unlikely; however, that Blakeley will be available. The selection of 'another man, training, and the possible fixture of a match between this team and another composed of A graders for next Sato-day's carnival were left with; Mr. Claridge. '-'■-'•' ■-■*■■ Mr. N. McCartney and Mr. P. Coira' were selected as the centre "delegates to the. annual conference of centres at Napier,* Mr. B. Mclver to attend if _r.: Coira is unavailable. The centre does not intend to apply for- the holding of the 1934 championships at.Wellington. The Featherston Club's application to hold its carnival on 7th March or earlier was granted, and permission for the holding of the 880 yards centre championship there was given. _ Lack of boats on the Peck Shield course and proposals for having some organised patrol service next year were discussed, and those who assisted were thanked; The difficulties confronting a new handicapper were mentioned, and it was resolved that all clubs should furnish the best times of their members for all distances from 50 to 440 yards with a view to assisting the handicapper.
