RACING AT GISBORNE

one mile and a half.

TO-MORROWS PROSPECTS

There is a satisfactory card of mostly locajly-trained horses for the opening day of the Poverty Bay Turf Club's Summer Meeting at the Makaraka course to-mor-row, and the club anticipates a good turnover. The win-and-place system "of distributing dividends has been adopted, and undoubtedly this will prove popular as elsewhere. The form shown at the recent Napier Park and Wairoa Meetings should assist in solving most of the problems. The first race is due to start at 12.30 p.m. The principal event, the Turanga Stakes, has drawn quite a useful field, and it should prove a good betting event. The topweight, Merry Damon, has recently demonstrated that he is no back number, and he has previously shown that he can handle weights such as he has here. It looks as if he will be hard to hold out at the end, but if he should fail to get up the winner may be Valsier, Tahoma, or Kinsel. Kabunoke, in the form he Bhowed in the spring, might also play a part in the;finish. . .'. ■ :. . ■ . . The Plying Handicap has also attracted better than the usual coast class. On recent running Lordly Knight looks certain to be at short odds. False Scent and Hunting Day may give him main concern. Tai Ao, at his best, might beat them all, but little has been heard about him for some time. The following horses are' in form for their engagements:— Telegraph Handicap—Stitch and Hunting Jay. ■ . First Hurdles Handicap.—Rongo and Kinsel. ' • Maiden Scurry,—Mil vane. Turanga. Stakesl—Merry Damon, and Valsier; . ■ Summer Hack Stakes.—Good Hunting and Sunny Bachelor.
