RACING AT WINGATUI

DUNEDIN CUP MEETING

One of the most important of the.early autumn meetings in the South is that staged by the .Dunedin Jockey Club, and this year's fixture will be opened^at Winga-tui-to-morrow and will be* concluded on Saturday, i The Dunedin Cup' and the Hazlett Gold Cup (second day) are both decided at' this meeting. The Dunedin Club is making a further experiment to-morrow by adopting the win-and-place totalisator, and it will be the first club in the Southlsland to distribute dividends by this mode. In the spring it tried the three-dividend system, but, not considering the prices satisfactory, reverted to the old-method for the Summer Meeting. . The recent success of the win and. place in the North has led to its now .being accorded a trial, and interest will be taken in the financial result .of its working in the South. The -weather was showery at Dunedin last week, but it cleared prior to the weekend ana has since been settled. The track will probably be in good order. 4 An excellent field for the Dunedin Cup includes the wonder filly, Silver Scorn, and there will be a great ovation for her if she succeeds.' She has to break all records for one of her age to win the race, but probably the public -will send her out first selection. There are several in the contest who. will trouble her, Jjut her most dangerous rival may prove to be Ruling Light, one of the brilliant Simper family,, and one whose full worth-may not yet have been revealed. Autopay, if' produced, will also be in. favour, and there are niany to say the distance will not worry, him. Among the seven-stoners are such useful but, not too reliable h6rses as Great Star, Red Heckle, Shatter, Jaloux, and Erincess Argosy, all with chances'of succeeding; and Gay Crest, at his present position in the weights, has only to strike form again to be pulling over the best of them at the end. ■ • .-•'■■ .'■-■■■ In the Publicans' Handicap -is another splendid field, with the best available sprint- material engaged. Inflation, who has improved with his racing at Trenttiam, should be .one of the hardest to .beat. Among the others good support is likely for Cricket Bat, Irish. Lancer, Last March, and Assemble. './. ' ~ ; ' .' \ The following are among the horses who should make good showings:— 12.45: Warririgton Highweight.—Ballanes and Kakara. 1.23: Maiden Stakes.—Conca d'Oro and Silver Sights' ' ■ " 2.1: President's Handicap.—Amy Johnson and Dressy. 2.39: Publicans' Handicap.—lnflation and Irish Lancer. 3.17: Dmiodin Cup.—Silver Scorn and Ruling Light. 3.55: Champagne Stakes.—Guarantee and Fracas. 4.33: Stewards' Handicap.—Merry Peel and Hula Belle. 5:11:.
