STOWAWAY FINED

Arrested shortly before the Makura sailed for Sydney yesterday, Malcolm Baker, a labourer, aged 29, appeared before Mr. E. Page, S.M., at the Magistrate's Court to-day on'a charge of attempting to stow away. Sub-Inspector "Ward said that the accused was found on the vessel by detectives at 2.30 p.m. yesterday. He said that he had hidden himself away with the intention of going to Australia, whero he hoped to get work. He had been convicted for default of maintenance, however, and it was possible he- was going to Australia to escape the order. The Magistrate imposed a fine of £5, in default 14 days' imprisonment.
