NOTES ON THE PLAY

The Jenkin-Naylor game was full of dramatic changes. On the third head Naylor, when 4 down, got a rub off a bowl, and ran into first place, and then got another, making him 4-nil. On the fifth head Jenkin, when 4 down killed the head. Naylor got one on the replay. On the next head Jenkin was 5 down and killed the head. On the replay, when Jenkin was lying 5 Brackenridge (Lyall Bay) got second shot, making Naylor 5 to 2. On the eighth head McKenzie (Lyall Bay) made Lyall Bay 3 up on a trail. Jenkin made no change with his two bowls. Naylor was 12-6 on the thirteenth head. Jenkin then got a 2 but Naylor went on with 1, 1, 1, and was 15-8 on the seventeenth, and ended up 18-9 on the twentieth. The twenty-first head was not played. Carlton's adverse score does not represent the actual play. Gilbert (Karori) had a remarkable run against Efford (Edgeware). Efford opened with 1. Gilbert then went wiia, and got 18 shots (2, 3, 2, 3, 1 2, 1, 4), making him 18-1. Efford got 2 on the tenth head. Gilbert was 19-4 on the twelfth head. He went on scoring, and was 24-5 on the sixteenth. Efford got a 5, all drawn shots, on the seventeenth, and 2, 2, making 14-25 on the twentieth. Play then ended. The Karori team work was very solid. Ives ran np to 21-13 on the nineteenth head, having had a remarkable run of 3, 3, 1, 2, 2, 1. The final score wast Ives 24, Fielding 14. Smith (Eelburn)- met Dec (Nelson). It was 3-all on the fourth head. Dee was 7-14 on the sixth. -Then Smith got 1, 4, 2, making him 11-7 on.the ninth head. From the eleventh he scored 1, 3, 2, making him 17-9. On the thirteenth he went ahead again and got 1, 1, 4, 1, 1, and was'2s-17 on the nineteenth. The final score was Smith 26, Dee 11. Dee, noted for his driving, made at least three dead heads in the endeavour to improve" his total. The Kelburn team's work was excellent and Smith proved his quality as a. skip. . ■ ' Ecndle (Eastbourne) .opened, with a 2 against Maxwell Walker.(Auckland). It was 4-all on the .fifth .head, and 6-all on the sixth. "Walker was 14-10 on the thirteenth head. "Walker was 18-15 on the nineteenth head. Be'ndlc scored a single on the twentieth head, making him two down when the twenty-first head started. This head had a spectacular finish. Eendle was lying 5 counters when Walker had his last bowl to play. Walker came through an opening and amidst tense excitement drew the absolute shot, thus saving 4, and winning 19-16. His rink played good bowls. The Eastbourne rink also showed great form. There were six dead heads in the first eight heads in th© spectacular game between Eeid (Lyall Bay) and Benefield (St. John's), both sides taking part in the killing. On the sixth head Benefield was 2-7. He drew away with 3, 2, 1, 4, 1, and led 13-7 on the eleventh. Eeid camo within- two of this score on the fourteenth. Benefield made it 16-12 on the. fifteenth., Eeid then made four and one, and was ahead on the seventeenth. Benefield then scored four, making him 20-17 on the eighteenth head just as the bell rang. The driving on both sides continued right through the game, making it thrilling to watch. The two survivors with two lives wore Wellington Centre representatives —W. Gilbert (Karori) and L. Naylor (Lyall Bay). The only local centre one-lifer was J.E. Smith (Kelburn).
