TARONGA AFIRE AGAIN
ENTRANCE TO RED SEA
BEACHED AS PRECAUTION
LONDON, 16th January.
The steamer Taronga reached Perim, at the entrance to th© Bed Sea, on fire, and was beached to prevent her capsizing. She was finally abandoned after discharging 50 bales of skins and 250 bales of wool.
All the forward holds were then burning.
Miss Mary Cobb, the actress, who was returning from Australia and New Zealand, landed safely.-
A serious outbreak of fire on the Norwegian motor-ship Taronga, 0732 tons, which was berthed .at Pyrmont, Sydney, on 17th'December, resulted in damage to ea^go estimated at £5000. The fire occurred in No. 1 hold, amongst hundreds of tons of copra loaded, at Eabaul, and was first noticed at 3 p.m. Fire brigades and fire floats were in attendance, and after much difficulty was experienced in. reaching the seat of the outbreak the- fire was completely extinguished by midnight. The Taronga was on her way from Eabaul to the Continent 'via Sydney and Melbourne. .
