COALITION IN SOUTH AFRICA
THE LEADERSHIP QUESTION
(Eeeeived 14th January, 10 a.m.) CAPE TOWN, 13th January. The coalition negotiations between Mr. T. Boos and the South African Party were broken off this evening. Mr. Eoos asked for five portfolios, -one Labour portfolio, and five for General Smuts, totalling eleven, the Prime Minister to bo acceptable to both parties. This would mean that Mr. Roos or another Nationalist would be Prime Minister. * ' _ General Smuts telegraphed the negotiators that he could not agree, and repeated his. offer of Mr. Eoos as Deputy-Premier, plus three portfolios. Mr. Roos thereupon broke off the negotiations. He made a statement that the fight for coalition would be continued.
