PERIOD MOCKS
OLD-TIME CHARM
Special\and sympathetic study must have been made by the designers of the frocks worn at the clever play, "Milestones," given at the Opera .House last evening by,the Repertory Society, of tlie periods .3,860, 1885, and 1912. The costumes were in; charming■■■'sympathy of 'col.dur, and the'stage settings were equally good. c^x---< ..■:.';.'• ' Miss Helen Gardner made a' dainty figure in pale buttercup silk, her crinoline being gracefully- managed. The trimming was of alternate frills of soft silk and lace, while the low decollete was trimmed," to match, her scarf-was a period one/and her. bunches of curls were tied with ;blue 'ribbon. Mrs. E. S. Baldwin was in stifE black satin, with a shawl and cap of the time,: made of handsome lace, suitable to the" ideas of_ her age as the mother of a'family. ■Miss-Dorothy Molenaar was girlish in- a white book muslin frock .with sprays;of tiny roses and' forgetmenots as a trimming and a wreath for .her .hair. Eater she donned.a scarlet velvet jacket, which aeandalised her mother as being.^'quite..fast'' in appearance!
The 1885- froeking developed the "bustle" fa'shipri,; Miss Gardner, as the wife of the prosperous ironmaster, appearing :'in : a' ; "handsome costume of mauve: and^liniei-tinted plaid trimmed with'velvet, '' and with a tight-fitting vyelyet^bodice. ~'Miss Molenaar as the "spinster, siater"/was also in a handsome frock of palest brown ribbed silk, brown ribbon velvet and fringe being jused as trimming, and she wore also a small bonnet, .to tone with a group of ;pink shaded; flowers. Miss Mary Cooley, as the'-daughter of the house, was in. a charming frock of wide striped pink and white silk muslin, the bustle ybeing finished by a pink bow and the square-cut bodice trimmed to match with the addition of narrow fringe. ■Her bonnet was to match her frock. Miss Elsie; Lloyd showed a very perfect example of the middle period, her rather "loud" tartan frock being tight waisted and bustled to a degree, with a bright green! velvet bodiced finish, with white cuffs and ' collar. A boater 'hat "sat up high" on her head in the old style, and had'a smart green feather.
■ The 1912 period was- in the, clinging style, and was well exemplifledyby Miss Cooley in a smart sapphire blue satin evening frock, Miss Vivienne Tait in dainty pale pink .silk .with; sequnned lace,; Miss Molenaar in grey.' satin, and black velvet, and Miss Gardner asa very old lady in violet brocade and a lace cap. ' ■
The men's costuming was just-as well adapted *o the times, and the old French check, the glass lustres, and other oldworld ornaments were true to the time, and were followed equally cleverly and correctly, in the later periods. -~.... At the conclusion of the play quantities of lovely flowers were, handed up to the ladies and congratulations were the order of the evening. Mr. "Wauchop as the producer, and the "wardrobe ladies" and others'receiving special compliments. '
