SERVICE CAR CONTROL

STRICT SUPERVISION

A reply, to certain statements made by Mr. E. 'McKeen, MiP.J'in the House of in regard to the supervision of service cars has been made1 lay Mr. H.1 J. 'Knight, -of the White Star service, and Mr. J. C. Gallagher, of the Aard service:—"We desire to correct any erroneous impression that there is not sufficient supervision of service cars. If Mr. MeKeen had only taken the trouble to inquire from the Transport Department, he would have discovered that service cars are the most strictly controlled of "any motor vehicles. No vehicle used as a service car is permitted to operate except under a certificate of fitness, issued by a competent inspector of the Public Works Department, frequently only lifter an examination lasting several hours, and, moreover, vehicles are subject to inspection at any other time the Department thinks fit.

"Mr.. McKeen referred to the largo number of accidents arising out of motor transport, giving the impression that this large number of accidents was attributable to service cars. It might be news to Mr. McKeen toknow that at a conference convened by the Government last year to consider motor accidents, their causes and prevention, statistical records were tabled by the. Government Statistician which showed that during a period of several years before the conference, the percentage of accidents attributable to service cars was nil. This fact was | favourably commented upon by the' conference." - .
