POSTMASTER'S LAPSE

THEFT OF MONEY

SENTENCED TO PROBATION

(By Telegraph.—Press Association)

DUNEDIN, This Day. In the Supreme Court to-day Mr. Justice Kennedy admitted Gordon Campbell, ex-Postmaster at North Dunedin, to three years' probation for the theft of £79. His Honour took the view that but for. the unfortunate state of the accused's health he would not be in his present position. He thought the case was sufficiently unusual in the circumstances to justify him, in the case of a civil servant, in departing from the ordinary rule of imposing a term of imprisonment.

Counsel stated that restitution had been. .made.
