FOUR AEROPLANES
PURCHASE BY GOVERNMENT
THREE FOR THE CLUBS
Orders for four' aeroplanes—three for the aero clubs and one for.the Defence Department—have been placed by the Government. The three machines for the aero clubs will be de Haviland Moths, of a type.similar to those, which are already in general use in the Dominion. The Minister of Defence (the Hon. J. G. Cobbe) announced to-day that the Western Federated Aero Clubs at New Plymouth, the Marlborough Aero Club, and the Southland Aero Club would each be given one machine on loan. This would enable the Marlborough Club to carry on operations, as its last machine was ruined in a crash at -Wellington on Sunday. -.";- - ' '■' The Air Force machine will be a mod-" crn Fairey machine. It will be based at Hobsonville, Auckland, and will be used for naval co-operation" work. Mr. Cobbe said that it was essential for efficiency that two machines should be available for this' work, and at the present time there was only one machine available at Auckland. "It is a pity we cannot do more for the aero clubs," said Mr. Cobbe, "but our finances are, very limited and we are doing the best we can under the circumstances. We. are keen that flying should be developed in New Zealand, and we.are doing our very best to encourage it."
