DAIRY FARM RENTS
(To the Editor.)
]• f-i^. c jhaye- uo?T •? Mortgagors',-Re-hef Act and also a Kent Restriction Act both of which" are created to deal with exigencies arising from the present' economie/wisis.^ Gin, any,■of:-your readers in-^ ■a P? -5- i h? r, e 1S *n* Act or law framed to: deal with the following fexigency ■ also caused by -the present' untoward drcumstances? Some time" ago a friend of mine,. as the only. alternative to: going; but as-a relief worker, and paying reht.for I house m the town as.a shelter-for himself and family, took up a small improved farm in the vicinity of a town, for the purpose of dairying.and providing at least a roof Rurlo^ 1' VlmSe' f a." d f^ mily;- He-rent was such that even when butterfat was realis-ing-fs per lb, there was little left over and above the rent, for food and clothing. But as an alternative to relief work it was tie better proposition, as it gave him a chance to get a herd together, also ground tcrgrow vegetables, etc:, in, and all at no gi eater cost than a house in town. For ood and clothing he is relying partly upon his -small savings m better times, partly upon help given the family by two of his sons, fortunately, m employment, and partly on odd jobs he occasionally gets in the intervals between milking, etc. Now how! ever, despite Ottawa Conferences, butter lat is down to 9>^d or less, and the family is faced with the possibility of being unable to pay the rent contracted for the tcini, let alone the fact o£ there beinnothing left-for the family's support What I am anxious to know is has this man any chance of success if he applies for a reduction of his agreed rental, for Mich time^as the lower price of butter-fat obtains the rent being adjusted as and when the price falls or rises, and proportionate thereto? It certainly seems to me bir, only a mere measure of justice and iair play, it house rents and interest payments are to be affected by the present tall in values, it should also apnlv to agricultural rentals. But I should much like an opinion on the point from some competent authority.—l am, etc X. [Farm land rents, as well as house rents and interest, are subject to reduction under the National Expenditure Adjustment and the Mortgagors and Tenants Relief Acts if it can be shown that .the agreement comes within the .terms of the Acts—Ed ]
