ATHLETIC SEASON
NO OVERSEAS ,TEAM
The Xew Zealand Amateur Athletic Association at its animal meeting fast evening, after considering a letter from the Victorian Amateur Athletic Association offering the services of an American team under certain terms at the conclusion of an Australian tour, decided not to arrange a visit by a team of overseas athletes this season. In his letter the secretary o£ the Victorian A.A.A. said that negotiations for a tour had been successful. So far advice had been received that the team -was likely to comprise. J. Bausch (Olympic Decathlon champion), G. Saling (Olympic hurdles champion), 1\ Wykoff (former American sprint champion), and B. Eastman (run-ner-up in the 400 metres at the* Olympic Games). The team, accompanied by a manager, -would be sailing from San Fraricisco on lath December and would be arriving in Melbourne on 9th January. The athletes would be competing in the principal cities of the Commonwealth until 25th February. The terms offered for a limited number of meetings in New Zealand were a guarantee of £200 or 10 per cent, of the gross takings, whichever was the greater. There would be no transportation expenses from Australia, but the X.Z.A.A.A. would be responsible for the maintenance of the team while it was in New Zealand. The chairman (Mr. E. W. McVilly) said that the terms were too high and the time when the team would be available was unsuitable. He suggested they would be wise to husband their resources this year and make an effort to get a team next season. It was decided not to entertain the Victorian Association's ' offer.
