A strong northerly wind sweeping across the beach and boisterous weather generally, made conditions far from pleasant at Lyall Bay on Saturday afternoon, when the Maranui Surf Club Ljld its official opening. The club's spacious and finely-appointed clubhouse, however, met the needs of the' occasion, and inside it the large number of supporters who attended were comfortably sheltered from the elements.

In a short speech from the clubhouse steps, Mr. R. Semple, M.P., who was welcomed by the club's president, Mr. T. .Queree, after apologising for .the absence of the Mayor, paid a tribute to the service rendered, to the city by the young -men who formed the membership o£life~ saving clubs. It was a service whicji_, could not be valued, and members of the City Council and citizens generally fully appreciated that service which was given by the young men iv conjunction with their indulgence in the health-giving sport" of sea bathing. He had njany times men.tioned the number of lives saved from., that very spot, and he expressed the hope that this season the members of the dub' would not have to run out the line too often; but when they did he knew they would think little of their own lives amf' everything of those of other people. Mr." Semple concluded by wishing the club':a-tr enjoyable j'ear and then officially openeH' tho season. , . ■■;■■.•—.
