YESTERDAY'S EXCURSION

TRIP TO LAKE PAPAITONGA

There was a diversion from the usual mystery train yesterday, when the announced trip to Lake Papaitonga was made, and. a trainload of six hundred sightseers paid a visit to this charming and historical lake., They were well rewarded by their visit, for the day was ideal for an outing of the kind and the supremo beauty of the lake with its densely-wooded islands and romantic setting made a great impression upon those who had not before visited this secluded and strictly preserved locality. The trip was made by fast train from Lower Hutt ana Wellington to Ohau (56 miles .from Wellington), and then there was an easy walk of about three miles through open rolling country to the lakeside, where the travellers picnicked on the verge of native forest. The courtesy of Mrs. Hammond Murray in making access to the locality available to the travellers was greatly appreciated. ■•■' ' ■'-.■■• :

Quito a number bathed in tho lake, and others visited the two islands, by boat, and were impressed by the industry and enterprise of tho early Maoris of the Muaopoko tribe, who, by immense labour, had made the smaller island and turned it into a place of refuge from, their enemies. Both islands are outstanding examples of the beauty which the native bush can, attain when tho climate is favourable and natural conditions are undisturbed.

Tho party reached Wellington on the return journey soon after C p.m., well pleased with the pleasures of a memorable outing, for which excellent arrangements had been mado by the responsible officers of the Bailway Department.

Next Sunday there will be another mystery train.. . . '
