MISSING BOX

COLLECTOR BEFORE COURT

As the result of a collection bos being missed at the conclusion of the last Red Cross street appeal, a married woman appeared before Mr. E. Page, S.M., at the Magistrate's Court yesterday afternoon on a charge of stealing the box, which was valued at 2s 6d. She pleaded not guilty. The evidence showed that on the day of the Eed Cross appeal the'defendant, who was one of the collectors, obtained two boxes instead of one by representing that she wanted the second box for a "Mrs." "Wilson," who was going to assist: her. At the end of the day one of the boxes- given to her was1 missed, and the one she handed in contained an unusually small amount of money. Later, in a statement made to the police, the defendant admitted that there was no such person as "Mrs. Wilson." She denied, however, that she had. stolen the box or any of its contents.

When convicting the defendant, Mr. Page said that she had made a series of false statements, and he thought that the facts could not admit any. other conclusion than that she had stolen the box. He had no doubt that there had been a reasonably substantial sum in the 'box. The defendant was admitted to probation for a period of twelve months.
