SOUTHAMPTON'S HARBOURMASTER

To have held the position of harbourmaster at a port of the'size and importance of Southampton for thirtytwo years must be somewhere in the neighbourhood of a record, and the tributes which were paid recently to Captain C. B. Cottrell, who has just retired, clearly showed the high esteem in which he is held by his colleagues, the members of the Southampton Harbour Board and the local shipping industry (states "The Syren and Shipping 1'). Captain Cottrell commenced his career with the Southampton, Isle of Wight, and South of England Royall Mail Steam Packet Company, rising to command. He then became .their shore captain, and in 1900 transferred his allegiance to the Harbour BoaTd as harbourmaster. Since then he has seen the docks extend far beyond the limits envisaged when he first took up his duties; the size of vessels using the port has increased many times, and the depth of water in the navigable channels, for the upkeep of which he has been largely responsible, has increased from twenty'six to thirty-five feet. His successor is Captain TV W. Frampton.
