PLANS FOR THE SEASON
CANTERBURY INTERESTED
No consideration of tho question having been given at the annual meeting of the Wellington- Centre last week, it will be necessary for the executive or a special meeting of club representatives, whichever is thought more desirable, to formulate a policy in regard to sports meetings to be held this season. The matter is one requiring attention without undue delay, and it appears likely.that the centre's executive will be called together next week for this purpose. Meantime; athletes and cyclists have iv view the postponed Labour Day sports at Athletic 'Park next Saturday, the Laykold Cup meeting at Petone on '10th December, and ' the Wellington Show Association 'a Christinas carnival at the show grounds on 26th and 27th December. It is also reported that the Wellington Club contemplates holding an evening meeting' on ,the~ Basin Reserve on 12th December, and; the Kiwi Club are holding club evening meetings, at which, incidentally, athletes from other clubs are competing, and the Wellington Club also proposes running a series of Thursday evening meetings for its members. Meetings of this type have much to commend them. They foster, interest among the members and provide the opportunity for them to get into better racing trim for the more important events. .".-■.■ The Christmas Carnival. .. ... Nine amateur athletic events have been included in the programme for the Show Association's carnival, and the idea appears to be' to spread them over the two days, 26th and 27th December, by running heats in the daytime and finals at night. The proposal may. be all right from the Show Association's point, of view, but the disposal of all the events during the daytime, thereby avoiding the necessity.of athletes coming ,back at night, -would., be a fairer proposition from the point of view of the competitors. The athletic events, for which entries close on 14th'December, are as follows:: —100 yards handicap, 220 yards. handicap, 440 yards Christmas handicap, 880 yards handicap, high jump handicap, 100 yards and 75 yards ladies' handicaps, ladies' high jump, and }00 yards' junior handicap (under 18). According ;to the programme, there will be trophics -to the value of £20. In addition to the.athletic events, the programme provides for wood-chopping, horse-jumping, steerriding, and tug-of-war competitions. Interprovuicial Contests. The idea, of holding interproyincial contests this season, put forward by Mr. A. C. Kitto at the annual meeting, of the Wellington Centre, has aroused interest by the Canterbury CentrCi Mr. Eittq has received a letter from Mr. Ji K. Moloriey, a member of the Canterbury Centre, asking whether it would be possible to hold a Canterbury vl Wellington meeting at Wellington on 21st January, The Canterbury Centre will have two teams on tour in the North Island in January, and they would be available, with reinforcements from: Canterbury if required, to meet Wellington oa 21st January in a full championship programme.- While it is pleasing to note tho interest shown bjCanterbury ofiicials in the matter, the proposal made by Mr. Moloney goes a little further than the scheme Mr. Kitto indicated he had in mind for the start of such competitions. His suggestion was to invite specially-selected Canterbury and Auckland teams of four to take part in'the two Dewar Shield meetings, rather than to have a big team, containing probably only average" performers in some events, competing in a full championship programme. The date suggested by the Canterbury Centre also raises doubts as to whether it would be suitable. There will be races at Trentham on 21st January, which probably would be too strong a counterattraction to enable a success to be made of an athletic meeting.- If ■ Can-, terbury is prepared to send a team, consisting of,. say, G. Hart/T. G. Broads way, itsbest cyclist; and. its best lady athlete, tp. compete in Wellington .on some' Saturday in January, it should prove a better proposition. ; . , Tuition by Motion Pictures. " The question of obtaining motion pictures of champion-overseas, athletes in action; witt a view^tp their ;exhibition in New Zealand for the'benefit of our athletes^'has beeri .'one, that_has... been; talked. ;about; quite a .'lot in'the past.' X,1 Moloney, writing to the/Wellington .Centre's .president, revives the, question of tuition by motion pictures., He suggests that the pictures could,,.be bought in;N.ew Zealand/for &, "song" after they had been shown throughout the country, and that if the New Zealand Council were to collect a library 7of "this ''■' and; rented the' pictures 'put "to the different centres a great-deal of good, would accrue. Mr. Moloney mentioned that recently he had seen, a :very fine Grantland Bice sports .picture of the'^New York Athletic Club meeting....... ~...„.. 1..._. ■ , .
