ST. MARY'S HOMES
A SUCCESSFUL FUNCTION
Fine weather helped to secure the very excellent attendance at the after^ noon sale of work at St. Mary's Homes, Karori, yesterday. The bright gardens came in for a great deal of admiration, as showing both good taste and good work on the part of staff and inmates, all of whom take a great interest in this branch of work. There is great interest taken in the work both at the main home and the Duncan Cottage, which fulfil such a useful and happy part in the lives of a hundred or more young ones at the same time. The Mayoress (Mrs. T. C. A. Hislop), in a cheerful and appropriate speech, opened the_ sale, and particularly commended the girls for their lovely needlework, which :was displayed to advantage on a large stall.. Mrs. Hislop was received .by the matron, Miss' Parlane, and a little brie of four years of age (one of the youngest of the "family") Jianded her a bouquet of beautiful apricot tinted flowers. " Mrs. Sprott (president of the guild which controls the homes) added a few cordial'words of thanks to the Mayoress, of welcome to the visitors, and explanatory of the work. : A feature of the sale was the fine array of: Christmas cakes, these finding a ready sale, which spoke for their excellence,, as former "customers" were ready to buy again. There were niariy other delicious goods on the cake stall, and the staff and girls were very proud of the good show on the produce stall, as the vegetables, etc., were "homegrown, "ana of such jino quality. The flower stall, although.supplemented with some lovely gift flowers, was largely stocked from the home gardens, and^ was particularly artistically arranged. Afternoon tea was a pleasant' feature, well served by the girls, all of whom looked so bright and happy, that they seemed in tune with the beautiful place and weather. : The visitors^,: many /of them, expressed their pleasures at.the delightful, atmosphere ofthe place..The gratifying .result of; the "afternoon's effort was the sum of a little over £70.
