NO FURTHER "BAN"

CRICKET PROFESSIONALS

A suggestion made recently that W. E. Merritt, already debarred from representing New Zealand, should not be permitted to play for Canterbury in view of the circumstances of his engagement with a Lancashire League cricket club is not likely to be carried into effect by the Canterbuiy Cricket Association. Statements •by Messrs. D. Reese ana A. T. Donnelly, as -well as by others prominently connected with cricket, gave rise to much controversy on the subject of New Zealand players accepting engagements overseas, and in view of certain expressions of opinion. Merritt wrote to the Canterbury Cricket Association offering to stand down; as a candidate for the team to represent Canterbury if it was thought that the association would be placed in an embarrassing position by his being included in the side. /i Merritt's letter was considered at this week's meeting of the Canterbury Cricket Association, and, after a long discussion in committee, the following motion was passed;—" That Merritt be thanked for his letters, and, in view of the information, given by him, the association does not propose to take advantage of his offer."

In view of this decision, it is to be expected that Merritt will be playing for Canterbury in this season's Plunket Shield matches. I. B. Cromb and A. W. Roberts, who have accepted offers to play in Lancashire League cricket, will also no doubt be free to represent Canterbury.
