ATTITUTE TO NAVY
LATE LABOUR GOVERNMENT
REMAIRKABLE STATEMENT
LONDON, 14th October.
A namarkable statement in regard to -the alleged attitude of the Treasury towardMJio Navy .during the period of ofliee of the late Labour Government in 193Q is expected to bo the subject of auctions when Parliament reassemblDis nest week.
Sir Oswyn. Murray, Permanent: Secretary to the Admiralty, giving evidentiei before a Select Committee concerning expenditure on range-finding equijjwuent for the ships Nelson and Rodii.ay, is reported to have said:— '"Hie Treasury toot the view that as nobody expected there -was going to be a. war for many years' it did not matter who'ther the^ guns were able to big fired or not. The Admiralty is un.-alj.le to take that view. A new ship .must, have guns, otherwise we would soon. have nothing but a dummy fleet." This quotation appears in the minu'fcea of evidence, but the text of the Treasury letter on which the remarks were based is not given.
