NEWTOWN CLUB
In the presence of a large assemblage, which, included a number of ladies, Mr. J. M. Porter (president) performed tho thirty-ninth opening ceremony of the Newtown Club. After extending a welcome to those present, Mr. Porter referred to the death about, two weeks ago of Mr. George Scott, a, member of tho club. <>For many years the late Mr. Scott was secretary of the club, and he also served a term as president. "Wo regret the loss of a member who was so mu,ch rospected, and wo extend our sympathy to his family,'.' said Mr. Porter. Ho also commented on the excellent condition of the green, and said ho felt satisfied that under the care of Mr. Stophenson it would rank sis one of the best greens in tho Wellington district. No efforts ha.d been spared to keep the green in good'condition during the off season. Although there had been a number of resignations from the Club, several new members had joined, and ho confidently anticipated that in a short time those who had found it necessary to resign would rejoin.' Mir. Porter referred to the activities of the social committee during tho winter, and said that through their efforts the pavilion, had been painted, tho oxpense'being defrayed by voluntary . contributions. The committee had maintained a spirit of good-fellowship among the members of the club, and there was not a club in Wellington where .more harmonious conditions... existed. Everything pointed to a good season, and if by some unfortunate chance the club did not win the pennants or other competitions he hoped that at the end of tho soason every member would be able to look back and say it had been one of the test and moat enjoyable seasons the club had experienced.
Mr. Porter voiced the thanks of the club to the ladies and the members of tho croquet club for their assistance in social activities during the past season and the winter months. ;
In ,tho absence of Mrs. Porter, Miss F. G-. Porter sent down the kitty, and Mr. Henry Sexton, a foundation member of the club, played the first bowl. Mr. R. MeKcen,'M.P., also spoke. ■
