PAY OF SHEARERS
(By Telegraph.) (Special to "The Evening Post.") PALMERSTON' N., This Day. It was agreed by the meeting of the Wellington Provincial Executive of- the Farmers' Union to support the Wanganni Provincial Executive's decision that the shearing rates for the coming season shall be 17s Cd a hundred. Mr. L. Hammond (president) stated that Wanganui had agreed upon this rate and special meetings of farmers at Taihape and Huntervitfe had also decided that this was a fair rate having in view the prevailing prices for wool and the generally depressed condition of the farming industry.
It was pointed out by Mr. W. L. Grice that the Sheepowners' Federation had suggested that the rate be ISs, " and he thought that tliis should be agreed upon. Members, however, were of the opinion that the rate of 17s 6d was sufiicient. In the S/mth Island 18s would be a fair price, because the shetp there were harder to shear.
It was agreed to support the rate of 17s 6d a hundred, and where the shearers were not found to pay los a week for keep."
Mr. D. Scott raised the question o£ the cost of combs and cutters. The cost, he submitted, was prohibitive, and he thought the-union should take action.
It was agreed to endeavour to obtain a substantial reduction in the prices charged.
