FIJIAN TOMATOES.

The Federal Government will permit the importation of Fijian or other foreign tomatoes into Australia providing they are free from disease. This information was contained in a letter in answer to the New, South "Wales Vegetable Growers' Association. Representations had be.en made by the association that foreign tomatoes should be prohibited on the •grounds that they arrived on the Sydneymarket at a time when ample supplies of high quality glasshouse-grown produce were available. , The arrival of these tomatoes, it was pointed out, depreciated the prices of locally-grown lots. Although such produce is subject to inspection by officers of the Imports and Exports Branch of the Department of Agriculture and Customs officers, and duty has to be paid, they arrive in sUch quantity that the market is often glutted with them, and the effect of this reduces the price of better quality local tomatoes, which are grown by white labour, under glass. .
