ON RICCARTON TRACKS

ROYAL LOVE GOES WELL

TRIALS FOR WINGATUI

The early-morning work at Riccarton on Thursday was hampered to a certain extent by a fog obscuring many of the indication posts and making timing difficult for some o£ the gallops. The plough, liberally watered, was in general use, but a few, gallops were done on. the outside of the course proper. Unless otherwise stated,-the work was on the plough.

Martian Chief, was sent » mile and a quarter, Lochlaggan .accompanying him for the middle five furlongs. He ran the first half in 51.1-ssec, and the full journey in 2min 11 '2-ssec^ a good gallop under the track conditions. A. Messervey will probably ride. this gelding ia the Dunedin Cup. . i ■■".-■■."; .;.".': . ;.•;,■ . ■ :

Jason's Quest and Shatter strode over six furlongs in lmin 17 2-ssec, finishing together. .'.■■■■"■ Gay Crest and Adelphi were not ridden., out to complete seven furlongs ■in lmin 32 3-ssec, the last three furlongs in 41 3-ssec. A rider ■ has not yet been secured for Gay Crest in the Dunedin Cup. ■

Cricket Bat did not hit out too. freely over the initial stages of his sevenfurlong task, which occupied lmin 321-5 sec. -.'..'" ' '■'.'. ' .

Silver Ring was sent out to cover six furlongs at a strong pace ouly, but ran the first three furlongs in 30 3-ssec and the full journey in lmin 17 3-osec. He was ridden by G. Humphries, who will have the mount on him at Wingatui. Night Recital strode over six furlongs well in lmin 17sec, and Gesture occupied lmin 17 2-ssec for the same distance. The former looks well after his respite since the holiday meetings. The Quorn, who is engaged at Dunedin, but'is very backward, sprinted three furlongs in 37 2-ssec. Solwit and Morepork were together throughout six furlongs run in lmin 17 2-ssec. The latter should be a useful maiden Chokebore representative at the Dunedin Meeting. Taragona and Execution (Shambles— Sopra) covered sis furlongs comfortably in Imin 19 2-ssec. ■ Oratorious and Lady Zephyr were allowed to. stride leisurely over five furlongs in lmin 6sec. Babel again finished better than Ball Dress at the end of seven furlongs, run in lmin 32 :2-ssec. - The latter, however, has done well of late, and only requires the sting out of the ground to gain distinction next week. >:.

Semper Paratus and Starshooter ran sis furlongs in lmin 18sec, and their stablemate Tautbow covered half a mile in 51 2-ssec. Red Heckle and Mineryal were together throughout a seven-furlong task executed in-the good time of lmin 30 4-5 sec. '■ :; '-,■ ■ ■'■' ' '.-■.•■; : y\r ..-.';■• .- - . "

Silver Scorn and Berate were on terms after recording lmin 3 !-saec for five furlongs, the last three in 37 ; 3-ssec. The' latter, a half-sister to Chide and Riri, showed a change of form in leading her companion until nearing the post. Both are to make their bow to the public at the Canterbury Summer Meeting. Nightguard and Ma.Belle Polly were again associated in a useful six-furlong task. Tile former continues to show marked improvement in his work. Meprisant and Riri, who will also race at Riccarton this month, strode out freely over seven furlongs in lmin 33sec. ; Chief Light and Weatherly were companions in a spin over five furlongs on tho course proper, finishing abreast in Imin 4 l-ssec, the last half-mile in 51 3-ssee. Chief Light may create a surprise in one of the maiden events at Dunedin,

Also on the course proper, Royal Love, Raino, and. Gasrange. were dispatchedfrom the mile post, but went away in uneven order,. Royal Love moved very scratchily for a furlong, and was some distance in the rear until after passing the five-furlong peg. He then gradually made up ground, and, with three furlongs to go, drew ■'. up to Ramo, while Gas; range, who had led practically up~ to this stage, drifted out of the gallop. ' Kriisning on resolutely; Royal Love had a slight advantage from Ramo crossing the line. Ramo was timed to run the mile in lmin 43 3-ssec,' so .that Royal Love would break lmin;.43sec. He ran the last five furlongs in lmin 4 3-ssec, and the last half-mile in 51sec. The work-out was considered very satisfactory, and he is to take Kis place in the Dunedin Cup field. A. Eastwood rode him in the gallop, and will have the mount on him at Wingatni. Ramo also went .exceptionally well, and should more than pay his way during thevautumn. ' ,
