The action was deserving of the success it earned, and the. public showed its appreciation of the completed triumph with a most fitting ovation. .' -

The victory was the third for Awaken m three starts at the meeting. This four-year-old sister to Te Atiawa was much fancied at the recent Wellington Meeting, but she received a bad passage in the Anniversary Handicap at her only start, and was somewhat \ cut about as a result. How quickly the injury mended is shown by the fact that she was galloping as well at ever a week later, and evidently the racing this week did her no harm at all. Her contests on Thursday were not hard ones, and as she is customarily a solid mare it Is most improbable that her unique effort will have ■ any ill-effects on her. Moreover, she did not have big weights to carry, her half-stone penalty for the Waimate Handicap bringing her weight only to 7.13.
